Perils of Biodiversity Loss

The goal of this project was to create media for the theoretical client, Sustainable Living Academy, aimed at educating the public on sustainable living. For my design, I chose to highlight how human activities, such as overexploitation of resources and farming, are impacting biodiversity across the U.S. I wanted to stress the critical importance of biodiversity and the devastating consequences its loss could have. Through visuals that illustrate the effects of our actions, I aimed to convey the message that without change, we will be the cause of irreversible harm to our planet.

Content Map

Beginning my project here, I created this map as a brainstorming tool to explore different ideas and information for upcoming designs. While gathering the information was straightforward, the layout took the most time and attention. I began with a grid to ensure even spacing and alignment throughout. Once the layout was in place, I focused on positioning the text, aligning it either vertically or horizontally to follow the flow of information. For the color scheme, I chose greens and browns to evoke an agricultural feel. As a final touch, I added hills in the background and weeds in the foreground to further emphasize the theme of agriculture.

Social Poster: CHANGE

CHANGE is a poster meant to serve as a stark visual warning about the potential consequences of our unchecked exploitation of nature.

Building upon my concept map, I designed this poster to illustrate the impact of biodiversity loss. Using a tree—universally recognized as a symbol of life—I set it on fire to represent the destruction of nature. The intense, large flames draw attention to the central theme and highlight the danger of overexploitation. A carved silhouette within the tree reflects how human actions are eroding the environment from within. Red fills the poster, serving as a warning, much like a stop sign, urging immediate change. The serif font ensures legibility, reinforcing the message: change before it’s too late.

Informative Brochure

With the use of statistics and information, this brochure is made to educate people on what overexploitation is, how it affects the world and how people can help.

This brochure uses statistics and informative visuals to educate people about overexploitation, its effects on the world, and how individuals can help. Building on the tree imagery from my poster, I added more details to further emphasize the consequences of continued overuse of the land. I incorporated a variety of warmer colors to act as a warning, contrasting with cooler tones that represent the land in its healthier state. Color was also used to distinguish headers, statistics, and explanations for clarity. The tree's bark was intentionally charred, with a face created to symbolize how the environment "feels" under strain. Initially, I chose a serif font, but switched to sans serif for better legibility at smaller sizes. My goal was to make the brochure both informative and visually compelling, with a deeper emotional impact.

Informative Sculpture with Scale

Transforming my 2D design into a 3D sculpture brought the message of overexploitation to life in a way that engages audiences on a deeper level.

For the final piece of my series, I recreated my flaming tree, allowing viewers to walk through the exhibit and experience its impact up close. This personal perspective intensifies the connection to the message. The base features fake brown and gray grass, resembling ash, to depict the environment burning down. Small details, like leaves tied to the tree with red string, symbolize nature unraveling. My goal was to evoke an emotional response, helping the audience grasp the devastating consequences of biodiversity loss beyond just facts and information.
